Some of the best women’s footballers, including the Olympic champions from the United States of America, will be competing against each other from 24th February in the Women’s Football Mundialito/Algarve Women’s Football Cup, which is being staged for the 17th year.

Apart from the Americans, who were victorious at the Olympic Games in Beijing last year, the World Champions from the German team will be present, as well as Austria, China, Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway, Romania and Sweden, and, of course, Portugal.

The matches in the Algarve Cup 2010 will be contested in more than 10 Algarve stadia and will have a right to between 7 and 10 television broadcasts (to be confirmed), in an event jointly organised by the Portuguese Football Federation, the Federations of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, as well as the AFA, the Algarve Football Association, and with the support and collaboration of FIFA .

The Algarve Cup 2010 will involve a total of about 500 people, including teams, official entourages, referees, organisers, journalists etc. and will be followed by professionals from the national media and the media from a wide range of places worldwide.

The Portuguese Women’s Football team, in Group C, will be training in the Algarve and will be facing their counterparts from Austria, Romania, and the Faroe Islands, at stadia yet to be announced.

In Group A, Germany, Finland, China and Denmark will be facing each other, and playing in Group B will be the USA, Sweden, Iceland and Norway.

On the occasion of the tournament, FIFA have (since 2005) been organising a workshop for international referees from over 40 countries, also with the collaboration of the FPF and the AF Algarve.

The Portuguese Football Federation will soon be making more information available here.
