According to a study carried out by the Pew Research Center, the number of young American internet users between the ages of 12 and 17 who write on blogs has fallen from 28% to 14% since 2006.
The youngest internet users are losing interest in blogs and are turning increasingly to shorter and more portable forms of communication on the network, while the popularity of blogs among older people has remained unchanged, with some 10% of older internet users saying that have or post on a blog.
Adolescents who said they have put comments on colleague’s blogs fell from76% to 52% during the same period.
The Study also reveals that adolescents prefer to post short comments on social networking or micro-blogging sites such as Facebook or Twitter, or access the internet from their mobile phones.
According to the Pew study, 73% of American adolescents said they use social networking sites at present, as compared with 55% in November 2006 and 65% in February 2008.
The research also suggests that there has been an increase in the popularity of accessing the internet by mobile phone – 55% of people between the ages of 18 and 29 and 27% of young people between the ages of 12 and 17 said they access the network in this way.
Another interesting result of the research is that, in contrast with the majority of networking or micro-blogging sites, the use of Twitter is more popular among young adults than among adolescents.
